Tax Supervisor Role

Posted Monday, April 22, 2024

Thank you for your interest in WCG. The following is high-level information for our Tax Supervisor (aka Tax Senior) role on the Tax team. We also have a Senior Tax Supervisor role which is very similar to the following, but with increased expectations and responsibilities including compensation.

Team Overviews

WCG CPAs & Advisors is a mid-size yet boutique tax and accounting firm with 6 partners, about 85 full-time employees and $11.7M in revenue (2025, with $14.0m in 2026 forecasts) located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We primarily engage with small business owners (S Corps, Partnerships, PCs), rental property owners including real estate investors, and complex individual tax preparation. We don't do everything- we carefully choose the sandboxes to play in balancing client sophistication and respective needs, and our team member experience including professional development.

We take a consultative approach to our client engagements by offering routine consultation and a strong focus on planning and advisory services. However, we are still a compliance-forward, good ol’ fashioned CPA firm.

Charge hours? Not us. Tracking billable time to the 6-minute increment? No way. While WCG has hourly rates for open-ended projects and other craziness, our approach to tax and accounting engagements is very unique. We were one of the first CPA firms to offer Business Advisory Service (BAS) plans with a fixed value-based fee structure including our Tax Patrol Services (TPS) and Investor Tax Patrol Services (ITPS).

Support Team

Everything starts and ends with our amazing Support Team whose mission is to make our clients' lives better and to assist all other teams and individuals. WCG's Support Team is made up of-

  • Client Support
  • Tax Support (IDP, Binder Builders and general support)
  • Operations Support
  • Human Resources

Accounting Services Team, Payroll Specialist Team and Business Development Team have their own silo'd support team members.

The Tax Support segment is the largest and does front-end and back-end support. They collect initial data from the client (IDP, which is a TLA for Information and Data Processing... yeah, kinda stale but super duper important) and assemble it into an electronic binder using SurePrep (the Binder Builders).

They also collect payments and obtain efile authorizations through Canopy. The Tax Support team files about 75% of our tax return extensions with the remainder filed by the Tax team.

Operations is considered a support function since its primary objective is to keep the trains running on time for all teams and to provide helpful information to WCG leadership including Pod leaders.

Tax Team

We use Thompson Reuters UltraTax and is self-hosted by our own servers (we did Microsoft cloud for a while, but it didn't work well). We also use SurePrep for electronic tax binders and annotation including their 1040SCAN solution. The Tax team will prepare about 5,500 tax returns for the 2025 tax return year (due in 2026), with a nice split of 60% individual and 40% business entity tax returns. The Tax team has a particular fondness for summers and as such we attempt to prepare 65% of our tax returns by April 15, with only 35% being extended. May, June and July are primarily tax planning months.

WCG has 46 Tax team members including our 10 team members in India.

Accounting Services Team

WCG defines Accounting Services as Bookkeeping + Analysis and is an incredible value to the client from accurate financial and tax reporting to real-time tax planning and decision-making.

The Accounting Services Team currently has 11 people, including a small group in India. An Accounting Services team member works with 25-30 clients and primarily prepares monthly, bi-monthly, quad-monthly, or ad hoc financial statements using QuickBooks Online, Xero and Stessa (exclusively... no desktop, no Xero, no whatever whatever). In addition, Accounting Services prepares and files sales and use tax including personal property tax.

Payroll Processing Team

Currently WCG has 6 dedicated payroll specialists who process payroll for over 800 small businesses using ADP Wholesale primarily (we also use Paychex and Rippling). The Payroll team does not process payroll using a client’s platform or any type of hybrid system; either WCG does it all or we do not touch it all. Payroll is way too critical to have various systems and interactions.

Business Development Team

Our Business Development team has 5 team members who draft and update proposals, re-paper existing client engagements, handle corporate governance matters such as formation and S Corp elections and monitor the onboarding process for Business Advisory, Tax Patrol and Investor Tax Patrol engagements.

Overall, the Biz Dev Team is charged with growing WCG's advisory segment (versus tax-only engagements, or what we call TOEs) and works closely with our Client Acquisition Team (the CAT, a sub-team within the Tax Team) to ensure a positive experience for our prospects. Team members respond to inquiries, schedule Discovery Meetings and follow up on prospect interactions.

Other Requirements

All salaried positions must work 2,000 hours annually / 12-month trailing period. Holidays and other office closures count towards the 2,000 hours (e.g., Thanksgiving would contribute 8 hours towards the 2,000-hour requirement). PTO and other employee-requested leaves do not count towards the 2,000-hour requirement. Please refer to the WCG Associate Handbook for additional information.

Tax Team Career Path

The career path for Tax includes Supervisor, Senior Supervisor, Manager, Senior Manager and Partner. All new team members are considered “in-training” for a period of time which temporarily alters the role responsibilities above. See the Tax Team Expectations and Path illustration.

Tax team members can easily transition to accounting services or payroll processing. Many people simply enjoy preparing tax returns while others want to explore other options. WCG does not limit any employee who wants to grow and develop, and eventually find their career path.

How To Join The WCG Team

Here is the step by step process-

  1. Click on the button below to complete a quick questionnaire and upload your resume.
  2. If we like your detailed and thoughtful responses, we will swipe right and send an email to schedule a 40-minute call to get some additional housekeeping out of the way for you and for us. We are quick to respond (within 12-24 hours); please check junk or spam folders.
  3. If things go well, we schedule a 40-minute Teams chat with Jason Watson. This is purely to get a feel for each other. We can teach you anything… short of being nice, being professional, being energetic, being someone we can work with. Taxes? Easy. Accounting? Got you. Ability to hold a meaningful conversation? Well…
  4. After that initial meeting, and if we believe there is a basis to work together, we introduce you to our recruitment team of Megan, Terra and Beth. After you chat with each of them, we get together and talk behind your back.
  5. Next, Jason checks in to see if you have any additional questions, and to start formulating a role with the team, compensation, start dates, etc. Then an offer letter is presented. Yay!

Once an offer is accepted, then there might be a lot of radio silence depending on start date. As things get closer, we order a background check. For remote positions, we also do a tech survey and see what things you need, and start to discuss travel plans.

About 30 days before your start date, training materials and a schedule is presented.

And away we go!
