Huh? Many people assumed that since Jason had a last name of Watson, and he worked for WCG (formerly Watson CPA Group), that he was a CPA. Nope. Well, not until recently. On June 19, 2019, the California Board of Accountancy issued CPA license 140411 to Jason Watson.

What was the problem? Jason needed 7 more accounting classes which was akin to chewing on tin foil (his words). What changed? Jason attended a business valuation class offered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Denver. There were 40 people and Jason was the only non-CPA. CPAs are very proud, and they let Jason know in roundabout ways that he wasn’t one. Jason was cool with that since he knew he had the smarts just not the credential.

On Wednesday afternoon, a professor from Regis University who was also attending the class pulled Jason aside and told him about online classes, flexible schedules, etc. Jason talked it over with Tina Watson, the original CPA in WCG (formerly Watson CPA Group), and she thought it was a good idea. Truth be told, Tina had always encouraged Jason to obtain his CPA credential. Thursday morning he enrolled at Regis University to knock out the 7 accounting classes all the while chewing gum so he didn’t think he was chewing tin foil.

Nearly three years later which included accounting classes, passing the CPA exam on the first attempt and managing WCG (formerly Watson CPA Group), Jason is a licensed California CPA. Why a California CPA? As mentioned elsewhere on our website, about 80% of our clients are outside Colorado… and California is becoming a large client base for us. Therefore, WCG (formerly Watson CPA Group) will eventually need to register as a California CPA firm, and to do that, we need a licensed California CPA.
